“I could curse you for how horribly good you look in that clothing.”

I scoffed at Céleste as we walked down the corridor together.

“Don’t you scoff at me.” She pointed her finger at me. “I mean it. And if I see you in a dress, I’ll rip it from your body.”

I laughed loudly at her threat – one I was sure she would go through with – and shook my head.

“Duly noted. No dress wearing.” I smiled.

I had taken the scroll to Alvar that afternoon, relieved to no longer be in possession of it. She had also complimented my clothing, which again, I had no idea how to respond to.

Céleste was now walking me to the hall, which I had been right about, it was the large room behind those towering, oak doors.

My heart was thumping at the thought of meeting everyone in the next few moments.

“Don’t be nervous Elora,” Céleste whispered.

All I could do was take a deep breath as we rounded the corner.

The doors were both open, laughter and light conversation flushed through the corridor. I had to dig my nails into my palms to stop myself from backing out and eating alone in my room.

“Here,” Céleste said as she extended her elbow to me.

I smiled and slipped my arm through hers.

The hall was so very grand. So much so, it could’ve put the castle’s one to shame.

Old, oil paintings coated almost the entire wall space, little slithers of dark blue paint dotted within the gaps. There was a long wooden table spearing down the middle of the room, surrounded by benches, with a window that stretched along the entire wall sat at its head. From the ceiling, chandeliers of all sizes hung down like stars on strings, basking the room in a soft glow.

It was instantly my favourite place in the house.

A few people passed by us, all of whom greeted both Céleste and me. By the time we found a space on the table and sat down, I was feeling much more at ease from the kind smiles everyone had spared me.

I cast my eyes over the room, revelling in its brilliance as Céleste poured me a drink. I was pleasantly surprised and completely relieved to find that it was wine.

“You okay?” she asked me quietly.

“Slightly distracted by the room if anything,” I mused.

She nodded, agreeing with the statement, before she began to explain how Alvar had come across the house.

I was listening intently, until a sudden chill zipped down my spine and I could feel a pair of eyes burning little holes into my skin.

I dared a glance away from Céleste, to the male sat opposite her. His eyes were searing into me, and when I met his poisonous gaze, he didn’t shy away.

Neither did I.

Familiarity washed over me as I stared back, and I wondered where I had seen his emerald eyes and sharp cheekbones before.

“Fane, nice to see you,” Céleste said bitterly, following where my attention had gone.

“Céleste.” He nodded to her without taking his attention off me.
